What HR Managers Should Really Look for in an Analytics CV

A lot of analytics CVs look impressive at first glance. Python, SQL, Tableau – they are all in there. Maybe a short course is mentioned, perhaps even a certificate or two. But increasingly, these signals are no longer differentiators. They are expectations. When nearly every candidate has the same tools on their CV, what do you actually use to make a meaningful hiring decision?

What matters more is the context behind the tools. Can the person explain what problem they solved with Python? Did their use of SQL result in a measurable improvement to a process? Was Tableau used to create a dashboard that drove decision-making? Without that kind of clarity, a CV becomes a list of ingredients without a recipe.

In my experience, the ability to explain distinctly allows those who understand to shine from those who have simply learnt or remembered. In an age of increasing democratisation of AI tools, this distinction’s importance should not be underestimated.

Signals of Real-World Impact

Strong analytics candidates show, not just tell. The best CVs contain indicators of curiosity, follow-through, and applied thinking. It might be a link to a project hosted online, a GitHub repository, or a visualisation they built from open data. That kind of evidence shows initiative, and it gives hiring managers something far more tangible than keywords to assess.

A real-world example stands out more than any training course. I’ve seen candidates highlight personal projects that carry far more weight than academic achievements. A portfolio piece that analyses local transport patterns, customer reviews, or even supermarket trends often says more about a candidate’s practical skill than a generic course certificate ever could.

Communication IS a Hiring Criterion

Good analysts need to be good communicators. This doesn't mean polished public speakers, but people who can translate technical insight into something others can act on. That starts with how they present themselves. A well-structured CV that clearly explains outcomes, not just outputs, tells you something about their ability to communicate in the real world of business.

You are not just hiring someone to crunch numbers. You are hiring someone to influence decisions with data. That makes clarity of thought and articulation just as important as fluency with libraries or syntax.

Evidence That Builds Confidence

For many early-career candidates, job history might be thin. This is where portfolios make a difference. Even a basic project that outlines the question, the approach, the result, and a reflection on what could be improved provides valuable insight. It shows self-awareness, initiative, and the ability to apply theory to practice.

At the Institute of Analytics, we’ve built a portfolio platform to give professionals exactly this opportunity. It is a space to document real work, reflect on how it was done, and give employers a clearer picture of someone's capabilities. Not only does this streamline hiring, it supports fairer evaluation by focusing on evidence rather than assumption.

Moving Beyond the CV

If every CV you receive mentions the same three tools, you need a way to see beyond them. Look for signs of storytelling, signals of self-direction, and examples of real-world problem solving. Encourage candidates to show their thinking, not just list their training.

And if you want to bring more clarity to your hiring decisions, explore the IoA Portfolio. It is designed to support both candidates and hiring managers in having more meaningful, more transparent, and ultimately more successful conversations about data skills.
