Why Accountants Need to Build a Digital Portfolio

In a sector defined by structure, compliance and credibility, it might seem unusual to talk about creative outputs like digital portfolios. Yet, in the changing world of finance and accountancy, the way professionals prove their value is shifting. I’ve seen this first-hand working in analytics education, where portfolios are quickly becoming one of the most effective ways to evidence not only what someone knows, but how they think and work.

This shift is not just a nice idea. It is becoming necessary. As the profession digitises and the adoption of AI continues across firms of every size, early career roles are changing. Accountants, like many other professionals, now need to show they can work alongside automated systems, interrogate the output, and communicate the implications. These are not skills that come across clearly in a CV. A portfolio is one of the few ways to bridge that gap.

At the Institute of Analytics, we focus on helping professionals develop applied data skills. In doing so, we see more employers asking for clear evidence of ability, not just qualifications or job titles. Portfolios are one of the most effective ways to meet that expectation.

Entering the Accountancy Profession

Many of the tasks that graduates and junior accountants used to do, such as data entry, reconciliations, or compiling standard reports, are now being automated. This is already happening at large firms, including some of the Big Four, where AI tools are being used for audit testing and transaction analysis.

This means new hires are expected to contribute in different ways. Employers are looking for people who can understand and work with data tools, question results, and explain outcomes clearly. These are skills that go beyond ticking boxes or following routines.

A digital portfolio helps applicants show that they can meet these expectations. It offers space to present examples of past work, describe how tasks were approached, and explain what was learned. This is often more useful to an employer than a list of tools on a CV.

Portfolios Are Not Just for Technical Roles

Some people assume portfolios are only useful in design or software development. That is no longer the case. Accountants, analysts, finance officers and auditors can all benefit from documenting their work in this way.

The demand for communication skills, data awareness, and transparency is growing. Portfolios help professionals show they can meet those expectations. At the Institute of Analytics, we have developed a portfolio platform to help members present their work in a clear and structured format.

Supporting Fairer Recruitment and Career Growth

Portfolios also help address some of the challenges in early-career recruitment. When employers rely only on qualifications or company names, they may miss candidates with real ability who have not had access to formal roles.

A portfolio lets candidates show what they can do, even if they are self-taught or have come from a non-traditional background. It creates space to share experience, reflect on learning, and support development over time.

This also applies to internal career growth. Portfolios allow staff to keep track of what they have worked on, how they have contributed, and where they want to develop next. It is useful for performance reviews, project planning, and training discussions.

Clearer Evidence Builds Confidence

Accountancy is built on trust and accuracy. When professionals can show their process, their decisions, and their results, it supports better communication and stronger professional relationships.

A digital portfolio helps with that. It does not replace experience, but it adds context to it. It shows how a person works, not just what roles they have had. This is useful for employers, clients and peers alike.

The Institute of Analytics portfolio platform is now available to members. It is designed to help professionals present their work, track their development, and show evidence of their skills in a format that is easy to share and understand.
