Anant Agarwal is an internationally recognized leader in Master Data Management (MDM), Data Governance, and enterprise-wide digital transformation. Anant leads strategic initiatives that integrate robust governance frameworks, resolve critical data quality issues, and enable scalable omnichannel customer engagement across the organization.

Under his leadership, Petco successfully executed a high-impact loyalty platform transformation that significantly improved customer retention and delivered millions in incremental sales. He has played a pivotal role in driving cultural change through the institutionalization of the “One Petco” mindset, aligning 14+ cross-functional teams and unifying operations to break down data silos and enhance customer experience.

Anant’s work has also earned him a place in the Top 1% of professionals globally in the retail industry, as ranked by LinkedIn’s Social Selling Index (SSI). A prolific contributor to thought leadership, Anant has authored and presented peer-reviewed research at high-selectivity conferences such as IEEE and Springer. One of his papers received the Best Paper Award at the flagship DoSCI Conference, a platform traditionally reserved for doctoral-level scholars.

Anant also serves on editorial boards and as a judge for peer-reviewed journals and innovation platforms including the Claro Awards, where he evaluates emerging innovations in data and AI. His advisory role in global hackathons and AI forums has helped shape the next generation of tech leadership.

As a fellow of IOA and Hackathon Raptors, Anant continues to influence the future of AI and enterprise data strategy. With an MBA from Rochester Institute of Technology and a CFA Level I certification, he brings a unique blend of technical acumen and business insight to every engagement. His mission remains clear: to build agile, data-driven organizations that lead with purpose, precision, and performance.

Why Did You Join the Institute of Analytics?
I joined the Institute of Analytics (IoA) because it reflects the very principles of ethics, impact, and transformation through data that have guided my professional journey. As someone who has spent nearly two decades working at the intersection of data governance, analytics, and business transformation, I recognize the importance of being part of a globally recognized professional body that upholds the highest standards in the field. Being a member enables me to stay on top of emerging trends in AI, data privacy, governance, and automation.

The Question Everyone Wants to Ask: What Was It Like Working at Petco?
Working at Petco has been both exhilarating and deeply rewarding. As the Manager of Master Data Management and Data Governance, I’ve worked with 14+ cross-functional teams across IT, legal, finance, marketing, and operations to build and scale data governance frameworks that touch millions of customer records. The culture at Petco is collaborative and mission driven. Every project is an opportunity to solve real-world problems using data.

What Does Your Career Journey Look Like?
My journey began in business analysis and evolved into a leadership role in data strategy and governance. I’ve worked across India and the U.S., in industries ranging from retail and education to manufacturing and food logistics. Along the way, I’ve implemented ERP integrations, optimized supply chains, and automated enterprise reporting across 21+ systems. Today, I lead Petco’s MDM and data governance programs, where my work has directly contributed to $23 million in incremental revenue and $4.7 million in cost savings.

Do You Have a Personal Motto or Credo That Has Guided Your Career?
Yes: “Data is only as powerful as the integrity behind it.” This belief has guided me through every project, whether designing a data strategy or fixing root-cause issues in customer records. I’m driven by the idea that well-governed data isn’t just an IT asset, it’s a business multiplier, a customer trust builder, and a platform for innovation.

What Changes Would You Like to See in the World?
I’d like to see data used more inclusively and responsibly, especially in how AI is being adopted. There’s immense potential in democratizing data literacy and building governance frameworks that are not just robust but fair. I also believe that companies should start viewing data stewardship as a leadership responsibility, not just a technical one.

Where Do You See the Future of Data and Your Role in That?
The future lies in AI-enabled data governance, real-time decisioning, and cross-platform interoperability. I see myself driving this future by designing scalable frameworks that blend automation with ethical oversight. As an AI Frontier Network ambassador and contributor to peer-reviewed journals, I also shape conversations on responsible AI and modern data strategy ensuring organizations are not just data-rich but insight-intelligent.

Outside Work, What Is Your Life Like?
Outside of work, I enjoy learning, mentoring, and volunteering. I’ve been involved with university events like RIT’s Imagine Festival and have judged hackathons where students explore real-world data challenges. I also write, read, and spend quality time reflecting on how technology can serve humanity. Whether I'm working on dashboards or reading up on behavioral economics, I find fulfillment in curiosity and community impact.
